Are Your Legs at Risk?
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, typically in the lower leg, and can lead to serious complications if not treated. Two of the most common complications are:
Pulmonary embolism (PE): This happens when a blood clot breaks loose and travels to your lungs, blocking blood flow. It can cause chest pain, shortness of breath, and can even be life-threatening.
Post-thrombotic syndrome: A long-term condition that may develop after DVT, causing ongoing leg pain, swelling, or skin discoloration due to damaged blood vessels.
We understand how frightening it can feel to worry that your symptoms might signal a clot. That’s why our board-certified team, led by Vein Expert Dr. Deborah Manjoney, offers expert guidance and minimally invasive prevention solutions to help you stay safe and healthy.
Risks You Should Know
Common risk factors
– Prolonged immobility (such as long flights or bed rest)
– Recent surgery, trauma, or major illness
– Cancer, pregnancy, postpartum, hormone therapy, or genetic clotting disorders
– Obesity, smoking, or history of clotting event
– Large varicose veins
Common risk factors
Up to one‑third of venous thromboembolism (VTE) leads to a pulmonary embolism, a potentially life‑threatening event.

Actionable prevention strategies
- Move regularly: calf pumps, ankle rotations, or walking break every 1‑2 hours.
- Wear compression stockings: especially during travel or prolonged sitting; shown to reduce asymptomatic DVT risk significantly.
- Follow clinical advice: for high‑risk patients, anticoagulants or intermittent pneumatic compression may be prescribed.
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle: stay active, hydrate, avoid smoking, and manage weight.
- Don’t smoke: smoking increases the risk exponentially especially if you’re on hormone therapy.
