While often a cosmetic concern, spider veins can come with aching and discomfort. A number of factors lead to spider veins, including genetics, obesity, and prolonged standing. However, with proven, advanced spider vein treatment in Greater Milwaukee, the experts at Wisconsin Vein Center & MediSpa can help you say goodbye to spider veins!

What are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are a type of dilated or damaged blood vessels that reside just under the skin. Due to their close proximity to the skin’s surface, they can be highly visible, and even distracting. They appear red, blue, or purple in color with patterns resembling tree branches or spider webs, hence the name spider veins. Spider veins can form anywhere on the body but are commonly found on the legs or face. While harmless, spider veins can be distinctly visible and difficult to cover up or hide, leading to feelings of low confidence. Those who find them distracting or simply do not like the way they look may choose to have them removed with treatment.

Spider Veins Causes & Symptoms

Spider veins form as a result of blood vessels that have weakened or expanded. While it is not exactly known what causes the blood vessels to do this, certain conditions like hormonal changes, genetic conditions, connective tissue diseases, and trauma or injury have all been identified as causes. Certain conditions or habits may put you at a higher risk of developing spider veins. Those include:
• Standing or sitting for extended periods
• Having a family history of spider veins
• Obesity
• Pregnancy
• Use of hormonal birth control or hormone therapy
• Prolonged sun exposure
• Smoking
Spider veins most often do not cause symptoms. Some symptoms, including cramping, itching, burning, or pain, have been reported occasionally by individuals with spider veins. However, even if you experience these symptoms, treatment can typically alleviate them, along with providing cosmetic enhancement.

What It Treats

Spider Veins

How We Treat Spider Veins

Our medical team treats spider veins on the legs, body and face with two techniques in our spa-like office:

Laser therapy – Using our 940 laser system, a pinpoint laser light passes through the skin and selectively targets the underlying vein. The vein will disappear over time, leaving the skin intact.

Sclerotherapy – We use a very fine needle to inject a sclerosing solution directly into the veins. The solution causes the lining of the vein to swell, eventually sealing off the blood vessel and preventing blood flow from re-entering the vein. We most often combine these two procedures during treatment, causing a “double injury” technique which results in more complete destruction of these veins and more rapid results.

Spider Vein FAQs

Check out these frequently asked questions about spider veins.

Can spider veins go away on their own?

Generally, spider veins do not go away on their own and tend to worsen over time.

What happens if I leave my spider veins untreated?

Spider veins are sometimes an early warning sign of venous insufficiency or a back flow of blood. Even if your spider veins are not causing you physical pain, you should have them checked by a specialist.

Are spider veins always the same color?

Spider veins most often appear as blue, red, or purple veins.

What spider vein removal treatments are available?

We offer two spider vein removal treatment options. Laser therapy can be used nto heat and destroy prominent spider veins or sclerotherapy can be performed to eliminate the veins. The sclerotherapy procedure uses an injected solution that causes the vein walls to swell and close together, sealing off blood flow.

Can spider veins be harmful?

Spider veins are not physically harmful, though they may cause some discomfort. Primarily, patients choose spider vein treatment for cosmetic reasons.

Should I worry about spider veins?

Spider veins are not harmful to your health but can cause discomfort or self-consciousness. There is no need to worry, but treatments are available to reduce their appearance if you choose. We do have patients come in for a consultation as sometimes spider veins are an indication of a deeper venous issue.

How can you get rid of spider veins?

There are two basic options to treat spider veins: laser therapy or sclerotherapy. Laser therapy involves using a laser system to target veins while leaving skin cells unharmed, while sclerotherapy involves injecting sclerosing solution directly to the veins.

How can I prevent spider veins?

You can prevent spider veins from developing by exercising, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting the use of hot tubs and saunas, and elevating your legs.

Does a circulatory problem cause spider veins?

Yes, blood circulation problems can result in spider veins. When blood cannot nflow properly, it causes these veins to expand, making them more visible.

Why do I have spider veins?

Spider veins develop from weakened or damaged veins. Damaged veins are nunable to push blood back to the heart, so it flows backward and pools in the vein. This accumulated blood creates pressure in the vein, causing it to bulge beneath the skin.

Where can you get spider veins?

Spider veins are most commonly seen on the legs or the face.

Why are they called spider veins?

Spider veins have earned their name because these tiny veins resemble nspiderwebs.

How much does spider vein treatment cost?

The cost for spider vein treatments will vary depending on the severity of your spider veins, the specific treatment option you undergo, and how many sessions you may need other factors. Patients can expect to spend approximately $400 on each spider vein treatment session.

How do I get rid of spider veins on my legs?

Spider veins on the legs can be treated using laser therapy or sclerotherapy.

If you are concerned about spider veins, you can seek treatment from a specialist who offers sclerotherapy or laser treatments.
