Three Advanced and Unexpected Ways Botox and Filler Can Help You Look Younger

Botox and Filler – one helps us relax our frown lines, one helps us add volume as we age, and both are great tools to help us look younger. But did you know there are other advanced and unexpected ways to use both Botox and Filler? Although there are many ways, I want to focus on three problems that these treatments can help solve.

GETTING CHEEKY

As we age, our face goes through a transformation with changes of the skin, changes underneath the skin, and bony changes. Some contributors to these changes are gravity, sun exposure, stress, and smoking. The older we get, the less our skin produces and maintains collagen, causing loss of skin thickness. We lose elastin, which diminishes the elasticity of our skin. We also tend to lose volume in the midface. More youthful faces have fullness in the cheeks, and as we age, we become fuller in our lower faces. Think of this as starting like an “upside down triangle”, and as we age, changing to a “right side up triangle”. We develop sagging skin, jowls, smile lines (nasolabial folds), and laugh lines.

In the past, we would fill the lines to make them less noticeable. Now, a better option is to first replace what was naturally lost with the changes in our natural aging process by filling the mid face. Giving volume to our cheek area creates that “upside down triangle” appearance that we had when we were younger. Filling in the cheeks lifts up the face in a very natural way, decreasing our laugh lines and reducing the need for filler in those very lines.

THE WITCH’S CHIN

When it comes to injectible treatments, we tend to focus on our upper and mid-face and ignore the chin and lower face. Some of us develop a witch’s chin – a horizontal line above our chin and below our lip line. Some develop a dimpling of the chin, similar in texture to an orange peel, from an overactive mentalis muscle, and others lose volume in the chin area. Although these seem like irresolvable issues, there ARE treatment options! With Botox Cosmetic and fillers such as Juvéderm, Radiesse, Restylane, and the like, our lower face appearance can match the youthfulness achieved when we treat our mid face.

For dimpling, a few units of Botox will calm down the muscle activity and smooth out the appearance of the chin. Wrinkle filler in the crease restores the youthful look to the chin. Filler can also replace volume in the chin, enhancing your youthful look. Remember, don’t ignore the lower third of your face!

THE NIGHTLY GRIND

Do you wake up clenching your teeth? Do you have headaches daily? You may have hyperactive masseter muscles and be grinding and/or clenching your teeth at night. This can lead to many problems such as daily headaches or pain in the jaw or ear that radiates up or down your jaw or into you head as well as periodontal tissue loss.

Often people will seek out help from their dentist, who can make a splint to wear nightly, or an ENT to check their ears. Sometimes physical therapy can help. Another great option to consider: we offer Botox to the masseters – the main muscles of chewing. This will weaken those muscles and, often after two to three treatments, will break the habit of the clenching and grinding that causes the TMJ pain.
