Why Is Winter the Best Time for Laser Hair Removal?

Winter is a time for hot chocolates, leggings, and cozy sweaters – so why are we recommending that it’s the best time for laser hair removal? After all, bikini season is months away, so you still have plenty of time to get silky-smooth skin…

Right?

Actually, if you’re planning on debuting a fuzz-free look during the warmer months, winter is the best time for laser hair removal. That’s because the full results from laser hair removal (i.e. smooth, hair-free skin) takes a few months to materialize. Plus, a typical laser hair removal regimen takes about three months to undergo, meaning you won’t be done with your treatments until the middle of spring.

To explain why winter is the best time for laser hair removal, let’s look at the treatment itself. Laser hair removal works by targeting hair follicles with pulses of laser light. These pulses heat up the follicle until it’s damaged, causing it to fall out. However, the treatment process needs to be repeated a few times on new hair follicles before regrowth slows or stops. That’s why it’s recommended that clients go through a few rounds of laser hair removal treatments (spaced four to six weeks apart) before expecting smooth, hair-free skin.

Laser hair removal can also make your skin a lot more sensitive, meaning it’s much more vulnerable to sunlight. This can be a problem during the summer months, when shorts and tank tops mean your skin is more exposed. While we still recommend wearing sunscreen during the winter months, it’s much more likely that your skin is covered by pants, sweaters, and winter coats.

Finally, if you get laser hair removal done during the winter months, you don’t have to scramble in May or June to start your treatments. While everyone else is clamoring for appointments, you can enjoy your extra time off, knowing that you prepared ahead of time for the smoothest summer ever.
