If you’ve decided to get treatment for varicose veins, then the best step you can take is consulting a vein specialist about your treatment options. There are a variety of treatment options available for varicose veins, and it can seem overwhelming trying to determine which is the right one for your needs. Although your vein specialist will help you select the best one, it can be helpful to know a little about varicose vein treatments and what you can expect. Here’s what to know about the latest varicose vein treatments available at Wisconsin Vein Center & MediSpa.
Endovenous Laser Therapy
Endovenous laser therapy (ELT) is one of the least invasive treatments for varicose veins. It works by inserting an ultrasound-guided laser fiber into the vein through a tiny incision. The thin laser fiber causes the vein to close and the body to reroute blood flow through other healthy veins. ELT can take less than an hour and requires only a local anesthetic – it also comes with very little recovery time, and you can return to your normal activities right away.
Varithena™
Varithena™ is a new vein treatment (sometimes called sclerotherapy) that injects sterile dense foam made with polidocanol, a sclerosing agent with a long and safe history of use. When the foam is injected into the leg vein, it causes controlled injury to the vein lining, causing it to close. Blood flow is then rerouted to other veins. Varithena comes with a very low chance of the treated vein reopening, making it one of the most effective options available.
Phlebectomy
Ambulatory phlebectomy is a microsurgical technique that removes varicose veins in small sections through a virtually imperceptible incision. These incisions aren’t large enough to require stitches and you can return to your normal activities right away. Although it’s more invasive than other treatment options, it can produce some of the best cosmetic results because it allows your vein specialist to remove specific visible areas for customized treatment.
Which Treatment is Right for Me?
When looking at your treatment options, it can be helpful to consider your preferences for treatment. Good factors to consider are your budget, lifestyle, cosmetic goals, and level of comfort. During a consultation, our vein specialists can discuss your preferences and help you make an informed decision about the right treatment for you. You’ll also discuss a complete vein care plan including ways to prevent varicose veins from coming back, as well as aftercare steps and when you can return to your exercise regimen.
